What Aeration Adds to Your Pond

Whether you’re considering a surface aerator, an aerating fountain, or a diffused aeration system, this pond aeration guide was built to help you understand how aeration systems work, choose the right one, and get it installed without issue.

If your pond’s ecosystem were a body, aeration would be its cardio. It keeps oxygen flowing, clears out waste, and builds a healthy system from the inside out. Aeration works by increasing circulation and oxygen exchange in your water, which prevents algae blooms, reduces foul odors, and protects fish during the hottest months of the summer and iciest stretches of the winter.

Each type of aerator does this a little differently. Surface aerators and aerating fountains agitate the water at the top, while diffused systems push air from the shore down to a bottom diffuser that oxygenates the entire water column. The right choice depends on your pond’s depth, size, shape and what’s driving your water quality concerns.

Surface Aeration vs Diffused Aeration

Not sure which one you need? Here’s the difference between the two at a glance!

Surface Aeration

Diffused Aeration

Usable Systems

Aerating Fountains

Surface Aerators

Sub-Surface Aeration Systems

Ideal Pond Depth

Works best at or under 6 to 8 feet

Effective at almost any depth, especially valuable past 8 feet

How Oxygen is Added

A propeller throws water directly into the air, where the droplets interact with the oxygen and splash down to the surface, adding oxygen

An air compressor sits on the edge of your pond and pushes air through air hoses that are attached to bottom diffusers that release air from the bottom of the pond

Winter Operation

Usually shut down or removed from pond

Often run through winter to prevent fish kills

Best For

Aesthetic ponds on the shallow side

Fish ponds, deep ponds, ponds with serious water quality problems
